CAYO DISTRICT SIGHT SEEING TOURS
at the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

The beauty of nature's artistry is evident in the Mountain Pine Ridge, especially at Rio On where the river has designed a beautiful landscape. Refresh yourself in one of the plentiful natural pools or relax on a huge granite boulder. These are some of the oldest rocks in Central America and evidence of Belize's geologic history. Add to this the beautiful hidden valley falls and enormous Rio Frio Cave and you end up with an enjoyable and unforgettable outing. Bring plenty of film for this portion of our Cayo Sight-Seeing Tours.

Rio Frio Cave - Augustine Pine RidgeRIO FRIO CAVE

Rio Frio Cave limestone cave near Augustine Pine Ridge

The enormous cave entrance (or more correctly "exit") threatens to swallow you up as you venture up to meet it. This cave was carved out of the limestone hillside when the forces of erosion carved its way through, revealing layers of rock formation all the way to the granite base. A gentle stream now flows through it. The surrounding area is a Karst landscape (limestone formations) overlaid with a lush tropical broadleaf forest.

"...I felt humbled as I witnessed the powerful forces of nature...you can see layers of rock formation... other caves in the area are best left to expert cavers...majestic bromeliads adorn the trees...the Heliconia plants were impressive...ask your guide to point out a Mahogony tree, Belize's National Tree..don't forget your flashlight"
